Fisheries

The Fisheries sector in Kajiado is an underutilized sector, but one which has a lot of potential. While there are not habitats and there has been little technical training, the County Government of Kajiado has begun exploring opportunities which can have significant economic impact for those we engage in fisheries.
In the past year, the County has provided liners for building ponds as well as provide the fingerlings to stock them. As these preliminary sites prove to be a success and generate income for the local communities, the County plans to expand its efforts and create a brand new sector of the economy

Agricultural Resources

Agriculture extension services have been improved due to improved extension, Farmers group approach and use demand driven extension services. There have been reduced incidences of crop pests and diseases due to scheduled surveillance and control within the county.

Adoption of climate smart technologies eg drip irrigation and green houses have helped to increase production and mitigate against crop failure caused by frequent droughts.

Cooperatives

The County is investing in cooperatives, both large and small to help expand the economy. Through cooperatives the county plans to reach cooperators in all sectors of the economy through provision of cooperative business model.

Vigorous market promotion and value addition through cooperatives will improve incomes of agriculture, livestock, products and service providers in Kajiado County. The Ushanga initiative has been fully embraced with registration of bead work cooperative societies to undertake the business

Livestock

Kajiado County is primarily a pastoralist rangeland but the dire need to sustain food security has necessitated a focus on both agricultural farming and livestock rearing. A shortage of 4.5 million kilograms of meat in Kenya, according to statistics, means beef farming remains a yet to be fully exploited, key economic opportunity for Kajiado County.

A sharp rise in population in rapidly growing urban centres has created an increasing demand for food, making both crop and meat production critical areas of focus for the County Government.

The County Government has put in place measures to protect livestock from diseases and shortage of pasture in order to maintain the highest levels of milk and meat production.

The Ministry of Lands and Physical planning seeks to plan towns and markets and to guide development and achieve orderly developments through mapping and survey of townships.

The Urban Development Department seeks to map urban boundaries, plan urban space, identify support infrastructure for urban development, present priority areas of planning and to inform future development and investments. The department seeks to create and implement plans on drainage, waste management and connectivity as well as housing.
