KAJIADO CLINICAL OFFICERS CALL OF STRIKE AFTER DEAL WITH THE GOVERNOR

Less than a fortnight after Nurses in Kajiado returned to work after a strike, Clinical Officers from the County have this evening CALLED OFF their two months strike.

The decision was arrived at after a consultative meeting with the County’s administration.

The Clinical Officers went on strike on December 7 demanding a raft of benefits that included better allowances, promotions and supply of Personal Protective Equipment ( PPEs).

The strike had paralyzed services in several facilities forcing the Governor to rally the Department of Health Services to engage the Clinical Officers for an immediate return to work formula.

The fruits of the tough negotiations were evident today when the County Secretary Francis Sakuda, Health Services CEC Member Esther Somoire and the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (ĶUCO) officials led by Kajiado Branch Chairman Victor Kuntai emerged from a meeting at the County Headquarters.

” We have hammered a favourable return to work formular which contained matters touching on working conditions, promotions, personal protective equipment and salaries,” said Mr Kuntai.

He added, “We thank the Governor and our Health Minister, Ms Somoire , for giving us a hearing and agreeing to address our grievances,”.

Kuntai then announced,” We have now called off the strike with immediate effect. We are instructing all the Clinical Officers to be back to work within the next 24 hours,”

On her part, Ms Somoire who was flanked by CS Sakuda and the County Attorney Augustine Sekeyian, announced the Officers’ January salary which had been withheld would be released. “We shall also not victimize any officer who missed duty during the period of the go slow,” said the Health CECM

COUNTY COVID-19 SITUATION UPDATE

The County Government of Kajiado has received reports of 6 new Covid-19 positive cases bringing the cumulative number to 88 patients since the 13th of March 2020 when the first case was reported. The distributions of the new positive cases are as follows;

  1. Kajiado central -5 (3 local and 2 truck drivers).
  2. Kajiado east -1 (mortality).

They were all evacuated to various isolation and treatment centers within and out of the County. Contact listing and tracing by our surveillance team has started immediately. It is so unfortunate that as a County we have registered the first Covid-19 death case, the deceased was buried today as per MOH guidelines. The County Government administration would like to pass our heartfelt condolences to the family and Friends may his soul rest in eternal peace.

Our isolation and treatment centres have 20 patients admitted currently, and the number has been steadily increasing. We would also like to report that our fight against the pandemic suffered a setback when the emergency response team was blocked from accessing the Namanga hotspot to take samples, trace contacts and attend to patients.

Sadly later the situation worsened with our only ambulance based in Namanga attacked at Ilbissil community demonstration while ferrying a critically ill patient to Kajiado County Referral Hospital. Members of the public are informed to avoid blocking lifesaving emergency services which benefit the general public.

Lastly we would like to remind everyone of us to become more careful, practice all prevention measures and incase of any feeling of being unwell, seek medical attention early. Kindly let’s all continue visiting our health facilities for routine health services and screening.

CORONA VIRUS UPDATE

Human traffic to and from Tanzanian continues to pose a challenge to efforts instituted by the County Government in combating the spread of the COVID-19. According to the County Department of Health, foreigners constitute a bulk of the quarantined cases at isolation facilities at the border entry points with screening done by health workers at Namanga indicating that 84% originated from Tanzania, 16% from Zambia while a notable number were from Kenya, Malawi and Namibia. Drivers and Traders who frequently cross the border have been identified as the highest risk groups. 10 Kenyans are currently being detained and quarantined at the border health facility awaiting testing and further determination.

Esther Somoire, Health CEC said so far 119 suspected cases have been reported in Kajiado with zero deaths recorded. This figure includes those at the border points. 104 patients have so far been tested in the County with 15 of them cleared after initial screening showed they did not exhibit any Corona related symptoms.

She maintained that Kajiado is still a high risk County due to its geographical proximity to the capital city Nairobi and as an international gateway through Tanzania to other countries adding that her Department together with the County Security Team has already instituted stringent measures to limit cross border movement including monitoring adherence to social distancing norms and use of personal protective, equipment, PPE specifically face masks. These measures will include activation of door to door screenings of suspected COVID-19 cases and mandatory quarantine for those flouting curfew directives. Plans are also underway to close down Shompole Market and others within the County deemed as risk zones for community transmission.

She advised members of the public to adhere to basic sanitation norms of washing hands with soap, or use of hand sanitizer and social distancing as a way of breaking the transmission gap in the community.

Meanwhile, the third Corona Virus patient from Ngong, Matasia continues to receive medical care at the Kenyatta University Hospital. 32 persons that she had come into contact with are still quarantined in an Isolation center in Ngong. Thirteen of them are awaiting test results.

The County leadership led by H.E. Joseph Lenku has also asked all residents to observe calls for social distancing as a measure in breaking the gap in the spread of the pandemic. This is while the County government steps up distribution of personal protective equipment, PPEs hand sanitizers and other COVID-19 response commodities.
